Ornaments from Monschau's Glassworks
We're going once again to Monschau, Germany for today's ornament pick.
To get to Monschau, you take the E40 highway toward Germany. Before leaving Belgium however you exit at Eupen and head into the Eifel region, a mostly forested highland area popular among hikers. The national route N67 (also known as Monschaer Strasse) will take you across the border into Germany (I still remember the 'Pre-European-Union' days when a stop at the border was required to stamp your passport), past impressive beech hedges, right into Monschau.
Upon entering the village, you'll park at the Glashütte Monschau parking lot. This is the Monschau Glassworks where you can learn about the ancient artistic practice of blowing glass.
Their is, of course, a gift shop and that is where these ornaments come from. We have 4 of them, two are red and two are gold. They are probably 6-7" in length and dangle beautifully inside 'gaps' in the tree branches (no hanging them on the tips... too dangerous).
If you'd like to learn more about the village of Monschau, you can visit their official website here. If you'd like to check out the Glashütte's website, click here - you can even shop online!
If you are ever IN the region of eastern Belgium or western Germany and have a bit of time to spare, you won't want to miss Monschau... it truly IS the gem of the Eifel region!
